Alfred Russ Jr

Alfred Russ Jr. was born on March 30, 1939 in Little Rock, Arkansas to Alfred Russ Sr. and Mildred Mann Russ. He attended Bush Elementary School, Dunbar Jr./ Sr. High School, and was a member of the first graduating class of Horace Mann High School in 1956, at the age 17. Less than two and a half weeks after his graduation, he headed off to USAF basic training at Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas. He became one of our nation’s youngest “Cold Warriors” when he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and based at Kadena AB in Okinawa, Japan with the awesome responsibility of maintaining the Mark 6 Nuclear Freefall Weapon, all before his 18th birthday. He took pride in the fact that the United States “never had to drop the Mark 6 in anger,” claiming that peace was their profession.
After his USAF commitment, and for a short while, he lived in Los Angeles with his uncle Sterling Russ and cousin Harold Russ, Jr. He eventually moved back home to Little Rock and worked in varied local industry, including being a bouncer at the Flamingo Club, while continuing his studies at Philander Smith College and Arkansas Baptist College. He started his employment with the United States Postal Service and later became part owner/operator of his father’s store, Al’s Liquor in the East End of Little Rock.
He loved cars, airplanes, jazz and blues music, and tinkering with various projects in his workshop in the garage. He loved tinkering and piddling so much that after retiring from USPS he enrolled in Pulaski Technical College to tinker in their small engine repair laboratory. He dealt with massive, difficult projects by quoting one of his favorite sayings, “It’s hard by the yard, but it’s a cinch by the inch.”

He was a strict disciplinarian who was hard, but fair, on his three sons. He was in the business of raising “bulletproof” men. He compelled people that he cared for, to always take pride in their work and appearance.

He is survived by wife of 52 years, Faye Perry Russ; sons, Alfred III (Lucky) Fort Worth, TX; Roderic (Rod) LR; Bryan Germaine (BG) Bryant, AR; sister, Melrita Russ (Clenard “Sal”) Bonner; 7 grandchildren including Cameron, Breyana, Tristan, Truth, Christopher, Bryan, Jr., Cicely and a host of wonderful sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbors. ~rar
